About Us

Smoky Hill R/C Flying Club, Inc.

The Smoky Hill R/C Flying Club, Inc. evolved from two AMA chartered flying clubs. The Mid America Remote Control Society (MARCS) and Salina Area Flying Eagles (SAFE) have joined together to form a unified, miniature and giant scale Radio Control flying club that caters to pilots and builders of gas or electric powered fixed wing aircraft, helicopters and glider models. The club's goal is to provide instruction, education and a safe flying environment for all of our flying club members. Our current club caters to pilots that fly miniature to one-third to half scaled aircraft. Experienced pilots and educational seminars are occasionally provided that are helpful to beginning and advanced pilots, alike.

Smoky Hill R/C Flying Club, Inc. is a Non-Profit Organization. There is no compensation paid to the corporation directors for serving. All membership dues are used to pay club operating expenses that include field rent, site improvements, newsletters, irrigation costs, annual incorporation, AMA charter, insurance, lawn mower maintenance, other equipment up keep, and club sponsored events. We rely heavily on membership volunteers to help in maintaining our flying site. Participation from volunteers also helps keep expenses down. This way we are allowed to increase field improvement projects such as the pilot shade and picnic shelter.

The Smoky Hill R/C Flying Club, Inc. has an optional subdivision for International Miniature Aircraft Association Inc., an organization that caters to large remote control aircraft.

Our club provides members with a grass flying site, second to none in this area. Our flying site is known as the Smoky Hill Model Flying Field. The field is located approximately 1/2 mile to the east of the intersection of Ohio Street and Schilling Road in Salina, Kansas. The Salina site has two runways available with the North and South runway being over 800 feet long.

All pilots that wish to fly, are to have a current Smoky Hill R/C Flying Club membership plus a current membership with the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA). The Smoky Hill R/C Flying Club is a charter member of the AMA national organization and requires all of the flyers be members of the AMA. The AMA provides safety standards, political leverage (related to model aviation), advice related to the operation of a flying site and provides liability coverage involving the operation of model aircraft.
